In Memory of The Most Ven. Liao Chung, The Late President of World Buddhist
Sangha Council


The World Buddhist Sangha Council, an international Buddhist organization, held its first general conference in Sri Lanka in 1966. Its objectives: To unite worldwide Buddhist sangha members, to promote the Buddha’s teaching of compassion, and to seek for world peace.


Up to today, the WBSC has held ten general conferences. In retrospect of
these nearly 50 years, the WBSC has been leading the Buddhist sangha members from different parts of the world to propagate Buddha dharma with impressive contribution.


The WBSC held its general conference, the first time in Taipei, in 1980. Since then, the secretariat moved to Taipei. Until now, Taipei has been the center of the WBSC’s activities. The fact that international Buddhists have the privilege to promote Buddha dharma freely in Taiwan owes partly to the effort of Most Ven. Liao Chung.


Most Ven. Liao Chung had made remarkable contribution to Buddhism. In addition to assuming the presidency of the WBSC, he vas also the abbot of Shan Dao Temple in Taipei, and the founding chairperson of Huan Chuang University.


Most Ven. Liao Chung was the chairperson of the organizing committee of the 7 general conference of WBSC, and was elected as the president of WBSC by the sangha leaders from different countries .


Then, Most Ven. Liao Chung was re-elected as the president of WBSC in the 8th, 9th and 10th general conferences. During his presidency, the WBSC held four general conferences under his leadership.

These four general conferences had different topics of discussion in coping with the current world trends. The 7th general conference was held in Taiwan with the topic of “Welcome the e epoch and move towards the new trend of dharma propagation of internet information,” the 8th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with the topic of “Promote the world peace and co-create the humanistic care,” the 9th at the Buddhist Holy City in Medan, Indonesia with the topic of “Concern the sangha’s co-practice and co-study and realize the ideal of harmony,” and the 10th in Pinang, Malaysia with the same topic. this general conference will focus on the topic of “Promote the sangha’s harmonious spirit and co-create blissful land on earth.” Most Ven. Liao Chung devoted his whole life to enhancing the world Buddhist sangha’s interflow, cooperation and dharma propagation.

He had made great contribution to international Buddhism and social welfare. His practice and merits will last forever. This article aims to express our eternal memory of and infinite gratitude to him.
